CHANGING TIMES - TRADITION AND MODERNITY

History

Göbel's Hotel Quellenhof - an eventful and long history

This story begins in 1873/74, when the Wildungen district councillor and member of the Waldeck state parliament, August Schreiber, had a spacious villa built outside the old town of Bad Wildungen. The number of spa guests coming to Bad Wildungen had already risen rapidly at that time and so, when building their villa, the Schreiber family planned to make the spacious house available to guests from the upper middle classes and the nobility as a spa residence. The "Villa Schreiber ” quickly developed into a house with international flair and a sought-after address.

The Schreiber era came to an endin 1900 and the guest house was sold to Moritz Möbus. The villa was initially run under the name "Villa Quisisana ”. Just one year after the purchase, the Möbus family expanded the “Quisisana” hotel to 70 comfortable rooms and modernized it with water flushing, stove heating throughout and electricity.

In order to meet the increasing expectations of the demanding clientele, constant improvements and extensions to the hotel were necessary. An elevator was installed and in 1911 the terrace was given a heated glass superstructure - today the beautiful Café Wintergarten, which still offers a wonderful view of Bad Wildungen's promenade.

After the First World War and the resulting social changes, the hotel's clientele and name also changed. Foreign-sounding names were suddenly frowned upon and so the “Hotel Quisisana” was renamed the “Hotel Quellenhof”.

In1939, the hotel was confiscated by order and converted into a military hospital. Even though initially only an air force reporting unit moved in and there were now camp beds and lockers in the rooms, the founder Moritz Möbus looked on wistfully as events unfolded in his well-kept hotel. The hotel was reopened in 1941 and, after renovation, a new spa season could begin. After Möbus' death in the same year, the Wehrmacht confiscated the hotel as a military hospital until the end of the war.

It was not until 1947 that the hotel was reopened to the family and the widow of the founder began a difficult new start with the hotel business. Wildungen developed from a classic private spa for the upper classes into a Hessian social spa, and so Elisabeth Möbus stopped running the hotel and converted her house into a private sanatorium.

From a medical point of view, the most interesting period in the history of the Quellenhof began inthe early 1950s, when a group of doctors from Marburg opened a psychosomatic clinic. Patients from all over Germany sought help at the Quellenhof.

In1953, Dr. Herbert Kienle took over as tenant and the Quellenhof opened as the first health resort with internal medicine indications in Bad Wildungen. In 1966, the Kienle family acquired the Quellenhof from the Möbus heirs.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the Quellenhof ceased to be used as a sanatorium and it was not until 10 years later that it was given a new future-oriented use by the Treff Hotel Group.

In 2004, the hotelier family Göbel from Willingen finally acquired the Quellenhof, which is steeped in history, and invested heavily and continuously in the renovation and modernization of the house, thus increasing the quality of the hotel enormously. To this day, no wishes remain unfulfilled here.
