From Eisenach to Friedewald & back

We visit our colleagues at Göbel's Schlosshotel in Friedewald.

• Length: 105 km
• Duration: approx. 7 hours

We start our cycle tour from Göbel's Sophien Hotel in Eisenach and reach the round church in Untersuhl after approx. 30 km via Hörschel, Wartha, Herleshausen, Sallmannshausen and Gerstungen, which is one of the most unusual Protestant-Lutheran parish churches in the Wartburg district due to its unusual design and is a listed building. The route continues via Berka, Dankmarshausen and Heringen towards Göbel's Schlosshotel in Friedewald near Bad Hersfeld. Near Heringen you have a fantastic view of Monte Kali, an artificial mountain over 220 metres high that has been heaped up with salt. A stopover or a visit to the ruins of the moated castle in Friedewald, which is located directly in front of the Schlosshotel, is definitely worthwhile. We cycle back to Untersuhl on further beautiful cycle paths and through extensive landscapes and return to the Sophien Hotel in Eisenach on the cycle paths of the outward journey.

Nesse Valley Cycle Route

Thuringia's new nature trail

• Length: 65 km
• Difficulty: easy

Relaxed cycling across the Thuringian farmland and discover and explore the original Thuringian natural and cultural landscape: A highly recommended, beautiful and relaxing cycle tour between Erfurt and Eisenach through meadows, fields and floodplains.

The Nesse Valley Cycle Route runs through the idyllic Nesse Valley with its small villages, fertile fields, colourful meadows and the gentle floodplains of the Nesse, which has its source in the Erfurt district of Alach. If you start the tour in Eisenach, you will cycle along the Hörsel via Stockhausen, Großenlupnitz and Wenigenlupnitz to Eisenach Kindel airfield. From there, it runs directly along the ‘old railway line’ to Warza, the track bed of which has been converted into a cycle path. The Nesse Valley Cycle Route continues along agricultural paths via Molschleben and Nottleben to Frienstedt, where it reaches the source of the Nesse and from there on to Erfurt.

Tip: The tour can also be done in one direction only and finished in Erfurt, for example. Then you can take the train back to Eisenach in comfort.

Rennsteig cycle path

Travelling along Thuringia's famous high-altitude trail - the Rennsteig is also a popular destination for cyclists.

• Total length: 225 km
• Length of first stage from Eisenach (Hörschel) to Oberhof: 78.7 km
• Difficulty: medium - difficult

The Rennsteig is not only perhaps the most famous hiking trail in Germany, but also a popular destination for cyclists. Many passages invite mountain bikers and cyclists to enjoy magnificent tours. Look forward to exploring the Rennsteig by bike and experience magnificent views, rustic forests and impressive nature. Germany's oldest and most popular high-altitude hiking trail is also accessible to cyclists and largely runs parallel to it for undisturbed cycling pleasure. Detours to the famous Wartburg Castle or the ‘mini-a-thür’ model park are advisable on the very first stage. Other highlights include the large Inselsberg, Oberhof with its sports facilities and Rennsteiggarten and the glass-blowing towns of Neuhaus and Lauscha.

Ebenau panoramic route in the Werra Valley

Adrenalin kick with a view

• Length: 3.3 km
• Duration: approx. 45 minutes
• Difficulty: medium

Panoramic mountain bike route with fantastic views. On the edge of the ‘Ebenauer Köpfe’ nature reserve and not far from the Werratal cycle path, a circular route offers experienced and inexperienced bikers the opportunity to put their skills to the test. The only official mountain bike route in the region provides an exciting combination of sport and nature. For the rapid descent, however, you first have to pedal your way up the slope, at the end of which a rustic rest area invites you to linger and recharge your batteries. A unique view over the Werra Valley, Hainich National Park and Thuringian Forest rewards your efforts. The highlight, however, awaits right to the end on the 800 metre descent.

The route is divided into different levels of difficulty with the help of colours:

blue - easy section

red - medium level of difficulty

black - difficult section

Thuringian chain of towns

A cultural tour by bike

• Total length: 225 km
• Difficulty: easy - medium

Medieval towns, picturesque half-timbered houses, varied countryside. The Thuringian Chain of Towns long-distance cycle route connects Eisenach, Gotha, Erfurt, Weimar, Jena, Gera and Altenburg - seven of Thuringia's most culturally rich and historic towns. It is particularly suitable for those interested in culture and touring cyclists. On this tour, the historic city centres and well-known sights are ideal as stage destinations. All towns along the long-distance cycle route are connected to the Deutsche Bahn railway network, making it easy to cycle and combine sections of the route.

Werratal cycle path

One of the most beautiful cycle paths in Germany, connecting Thuringia, Hesse and Lower Saxony.

• Total length: 200 km
• Difficulty: medium - difficult

The Werratal cycle path invites you to experience and discover at any time of year. Over a length of 290 km, it connects Thuringia, Hesse and Lower Saxony - past castles and half-timbered towns. The Werra Valley is hard to beat in terms of scenic diversity. The romance of nature, healthy forests, proud castles, colourful half-timbered towns full of friendly people and culture galore. Starting at the Werra springs in the Thuringian Forest - mostly within sight of the river and away from motorways - the tour leads from Eisfeld and Themar, directly through the theatre town of Meiningen, past the Rhön with its many hills and charming Hessian half-timbered towns to the confluence of the Werra and Fulda rivers to form the Weser.

Thuringian Hercules-Wartburg Cycle Route

Unforgettable cycle route with cultural detours

• Total length: 130 km
• Length from Ifta to Wartburg (Eisenach): 61 km
• Difficulty: easy - medium

A cycle route that inspires and connects two important landmarks. The 130 km long Hercules-Wartburg cycle path leads from Kassel along the Losse river via Kaufungen and Helsa to Hessisch-Lichtenau. Via Waldkappel you reach the Ringgau and finally Creuzburg on the Werra and via Hörschel the Wartburg town of Eisenach. Impressive parks such as the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, historic castles such as Creuzburg and Wartburg are just as tempting for cultural detours as the collegiate church in Kaufungen and the museums in Eisenach and Kassel. Look forward to an unforgettable day trip by bike.
