Many people know that plum jam is a must in Mühlhausen. But journalist Rainer Aschenbrenner, who reports on his “Löwen” visit to the Zum Löwen brewery in his blog as the “Wortdrechsler”, tells us exactly what is behind the “menus with mush and malt”.
His conclusion: “Because one thing is clear as daylight: if you're in Mühlhausen, eat at Brauhaus zum Löwen.”

Your team from Brauhaus zum Löwen
Historic half-timbering from the 16th century meets spacious brewery character - the beautiful time-honored half-timbered façade and the elements inside still hint at its former use as a pharmacy. Today, you can enjoy a freshly tapped beer between the brewing kettle and lauter tun, watch the master brewer brewing beer and look forward to hearty meals.
The brewery focuses on regional products: Goods are sourced from the local abattoir, Mühlhausen plum jam, Hainich gherkins and, of course, the indispensable Thuringian bratwurst, which is served with Erfurter Born mustard. There are juices and spirits from the Fahner Höhe, the orchard of the Free State, as well as wines from winegrowers in the Saale-Unstrut region. And you can also enjoy the East German soft drink par excellence, Vita-Cola.
The “Brauhaus zum Löwen” hotel is home to the only remaining brewery in the Unstrut-Hainich district. In a cozy inn atmosphere, right next to the brewing kettles, you can look over the shoulder of our master brewer at least one day a week as he prepares the brew. The “Reichsstädtische Pilsener” and the “Apotheker Dunkel” are brewed here all year round in the artisan tradition and, of course, strictly in accordance with the German Purity Law of 1516. Other seasonal beers that should not go unmentioned are Kupferbier, Weihnachtsbock, Oktoberfestbier, Brombeer-Mix and Pflaumen-Mix.
