The medieval half-timbered town of Rotenburg an der Fulda is not only situated on the river Fulda, but also in the middle of one of the most densely wooded areas in Germany.

You will find over 220 km of well-maintained hiking trails in and around the area. Discover the beautiful landscape on foot through mixed forests, fields, meadows and along the Fulda.

Our tour tips

 

R1 “Pilzchen” circular walk  

 

• Length: 3.5 km

• Duration: 1:10 hours

• Ascent: 130 m

• Descent: 130 m  

 

A short but beautiful walk with a unique view.

 

Starting from the market square, this circular walk takes you into the southern city forest. Experience a part of the “Höberück” on short paths, where forest and town are closest to each other. Enjoy the wonderful view over the lovingly detailed half-timbered houses at the intermediate destination “Pilzchen”. The special thing about this route: the R1 has a special highlight in store for puzzle fans, as it is an adventurous puzzle trail with wit and humor for the whole family.


 

R4 Fulda floodplain walking trail

 

• Length 6.6 km

• Duration: 2:15 hours

• Ascent: 10 m

• Descent: 10 m

Walk along the Fulda. 

 

This leisurely walk takes you along both sides of the Fulda along the nature reserve. Admire the rooms of the insect hotel, the storks' nesting site at a windy height and many other habitats for a colorful diversity of species in the Fulda floodplain renaturation area. After the short hike, we recommend a short stopover in Rotenburg's old town.


 

R7 Haselgrund - Alheimer circular trail

 

• Length: 8.5 km

• Duration: 2:50 hours

• Ascent: 210 m

• Descent: 200 m

Charming little half-timbered villages characterize the landscape along the R7 circular hiking trail.

 

Idyllic farms and riding stables, convivial village squares and cattle pastures meander through the Haselbach stream, making this hiking trail an experience for the whole family. The ascent towards Alheimers provides variety. A magnificent view over the Haselgrund rewards you at the end of the tour on the way back down into the valley.


 

Old Tower

 

• Length 3.52 km

• Duration: 1:15 hours

• Ascent: 100 m

• Descent: 100 m

Easy hike for all fitness levels on easily accessible paths. 

 

This leisurely hike takes you around the “Alter Turm” mountain in the Stölzinger Gebirge in the district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg. If you like, you can also make a detour to the Rodenberg castle ruins, which are freely accessible on the mountain.
