661 meter high, panoramic hilltop on the Rothaarsteig between Brilon-Wald and Olsberg-Elleringhausen - duration: approx. 2 hours
This trail is one of 43 soulful places in the Sauerland, which the author Michael Gleich has experienced and described with various hiking guides who are close to the region and the local area. A hiking trail that is so varied: After leaving the wide forest road, the trail continues uphill on narrow paths between dark green mossy boulders on soft forest soil over rocky passages. Here you walk on parts of the Rothaarsteig and the Briloner Kammweg. Gleich describes the sublime nature of the “Seelenwanderung”: “Finally, we emerge from the forest and reach the exposed northern summit of the Ginsterkopf. Long-distance views, we can set our gaze to infinity. To the southwest, the Bruchhauser Steiner, mighty volcanic rocks, rise out of the sea of treetops.”
I enjoy the hike along this path on my way back from work from the office in Willingen. “You only meet a few hikers up here. If I'm really looking for peace and quiet, I go here. This path allows me to unwind and clear my head. Everyday worries fall away as I walk up and the view into the distance gives me completely new thoughts. That's what makes this a place of the soul.”

A LANDSCAPE DREAM: The Uplandsteig is a challenging 66 km hiking trail that touches all 9 districts of Willingen and takes you once around the municipality. The certified hiking trail includes some steep ascents and descents, especially over the first few kilometers. Mixed forest, beech forest, fir forest, fields, flowering meadows and marshland landscapes await you everywhere with wonderful views.
Experience untouched nature with high heaths, moors, orchid meadows, fields and forests, climb the highest mountain in the Hochsauerland and NRW, the 843 m high Langenberg. You will also find boundary stones from times long past as well as historical sites such as the Richtplatz or the medieval ramparts of Schwalenburg Castle.
Our tip: The entire Uplandsteig can easily be covered in 3 day tours (22 km each).
THE PATH OF THE SENSES: The Rothaarsteig is a 154 km long, popular quality hiking trail in the middle of Germany that will ground your senses, mind and soul. There is no way around the Rothaarsteig if you are a fan of stage hikes. Far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, you can enjoy the wealth of views on one of the Top Trails of Germany.
The Rothaarsteig leads in a north-south direction over the ridge of the Rothaargebirge. The starting point is Brilon on the north-eastern edge of the Sauerland. Over the Langenberg (the highest mountain in NRW), the trail leads past the source of the Ruhr to Winterberg and the Kahler Asten. Here in the headwaters of the Lenne, the second major river in the Sauerland, the Rothaarsteig bends to the west and runs south of Schmallenberg to the Rhine-Weser Tower. From here, it heads south again through the Rothaarvorhöhen to the Hilchenbacher Winkel and on to the headwaters of the Lahn, Sieg and Eder above Netphen. Via the Haincher Höhe, the Rothaarsteig finally heads for its destination, the Oranier town of Dillenburg with its imposing Wilhelmsturm tower.
Our tip: The Rothaarsteig can be hiked in stages (approx. 20 - 25 km each way) - even from Willingen.
THE “LEBENSSPUREN” PRAYER TRAIL: Pilgrimage trails are all the rage. The Upland Reflection Trail is a 17.1 km long pilgrimage trail on which you can reflect on your own life traces.
In four sections, the pilgrimage trail leads you on a well-signposted circular hiking trail and invites you to reflect and contemplate with various contemplation stations on signposts. Beautiful landscapes and untouched nature make up the pilgrimage trail. Use the time to find yourself again.
Our tip: Take some time out at the Schwalefeld pilgrims' church and the “Church of Lights along the Way” in Rattlar.
THE PRIVATE HIKING TRAIL WITH A HEART: Discover the Diemelsee, the natural jewel in the Sauerland, near Willingen. On the 63 km long certified Diemelsteig quality hiking trail, charming landscapes and untouched nature of the eastern Sauerland await you on several daily stages. It provides hikers and families alike with vacation pleasures and nature experiences.
The entire length of the Diemelsteig trail leads leisurely through the green valleys and over the striking mountain ranges of the Diemelsee Nature Park. With 1700 meters of ascent and descent, it is one of the moderately difficult hiking trails in Germany. The trail opens up the entire region around Lake Diemelsee as well as the gentle low mountain range landscape to the south of it with its constant alternation of forests, meadows and fields.
Our tip: The entire Diemelsteig trail is divided into 4 stages and is very well signposted.
The Göbel's Seehotel right on the shore of the lake with its beautiful terrace is also ideal for a stopover, refreshments or a break.
