In 1912, Heinrich Vogeler, co-founder of the Worpswede artists' colony, built the "Haus im Stryck" for his friend Dr. Emil Löhnberg from Hamm "in a place that exceeded all expectations". It has remained almost unchanged to this day as the central building of the modern hotel complex.
Before 1912, he and his friend had wandered through the Sauerland region in search of a suitable place for a "summer house". The quiet and ideal location in the beautiful Strycktal, very close to the center of Willingen, seemed perfect for the building. The similarity to Vogeler's residence in Worpswede was unmistakable and even then the "Stryck House" was equipped with central heating and a water pipe - amenities that the Uplanders had to dream of for the time being.
Up until the 1930s, Heinrich Vogeler used the "Stryck House" as a retreat where he could get away from the Worpswede artists' colony, family problems and political disputes*. The house remained in the possession of the Löhnberg family until 1934, before it was sold to the Kesper family and then from 1935 to 2017 came into the possession of the Höhle family, who knew how to preserve the Worpswede character in the spirit of Art Nouveau and the atmosphere of Heinrich Vogeler in this house. Building plans and floor plans still remind us of the creation of the summer residence, but over the years the former country house developed into the stylish Romantik Hotel Stryckhaus through stylish renovations and extensions.
Since June 2017, the traditional hotel, which has been part of the Romantik Hotels cooperation since 1972, has been part of the family-run Göbel Hotels led by the Willingen hotelier Gert Göbel, who will also continue to run the stylish 4-star hotel as a "passionate host".
*A letter from 1922 shows how much Heinrich Vogeler was always drawn to his "Stryck House" and how comfortable he always felt there:
"This forest in which we live and the ever-rushing stream that sings me to sleep. Then this feeling of home: a house like the one I built here, which fits into the landscape as if it had grown on this soil, in this place, for centuries. Then the friends who sense everything that can bring you joy....”
In his book “Memories - Heinrich Vogeler”, the author Erich Weinert gives an excerpt from his diary, which describes the origins of the Stryckhaus:
“We went on a hike through the Sauerland with our friends from Hamm to find a place to build a summer house. Regarding the building of the house, I had stipulated that if we think we have found a suitable building site on our forays into the mountains, we will settle down there to experience the night. In this way we will get the impression we need to build the house in such a way that people can experience happy hours of rest there. The second place already exceeded all expectations. Half an hour's walk from the town of Willingen, at the wide outlet of a narrow stream valley, on a fairly treeless meadow and heath area with a small reservoir for the mill water, with a sunny spot and the cool background of a dark, old pine forest and higher to the side situated flank of tall beech trees, below the square in the main valley was the forester's office, to the side a water mill. The house was built with rubble stone, covered with slate, had all the conveniences of a modern city apartment with a kitchen-living room, large common room, beautiful bedroom with morning sun, bathroom, balcony for air baths, central heating and its own water pipe from the stream."
