661 meter high, panoramic hilltop on the Rothaarsteig between Brilon-Wald and Olsberg-Elleringhausen - duration: approx. 2 hours
This trail is one of 43 soulful places in the Sauerland, which the author Michael Gleich has experienced and described with various hiking guides who are close to their homes and places. A hiking trail that is so varied: After leaving the wide forest road, the trail continues uphill on narrow paths between dark green mossy boulders on soft forest soil over rocky passages. Here you walk on parts of the Rothaarsteig and the Briloner Kammweg. Gleich describes the sublime nature of the “Seelenwanderung”: “Finally, we emerge from the forest and reach the exposed northern summit of the Ginsterkopf. Long-distance views, we can set our gaze to infinity. To the southwest, the Bruchhauser Steiner, mighty volcanic rocks, rise out of the sea of waves of treetops.”
I enjoy the hike on this trail on my way back from work from the office in Willingen. “You only meet a few hikers up here. If I'm really looking for peace and quiet, I go here. This path allows me to unwind and clear my head. Everyday worries fall away as I walk up and the view into the distance gives me completely new thoughts. That's what makes this a place of the soul.”

Two beautiful valleys and heavenly views: At 12 km, this quality tour is ideal for beginners and advanced hikers who want to explore the Sauerland region on foot. The tour starts in Hoppecketal in Willingen, near the K1 chairlift, which was newly built in 2018. You will soon find yourself on the Rothaarsteig and Uplandsteig trails, where you can look out over the “Land of a Thousand Mountains” or the Ruhr Valley. At this point, you can enjoy the wide, untouched landscape of the Willingen Hochheide, take a short break on benches and enjoy the peace and quiet. You return to the valley through the headwaters of the Hoppecke.
THE HIKING TRAIL IN WILLINGEN: It's more than just a hike - it's a scenic dream. With a length of 66 km, the challenging hiking trail spans all 9 districts of Willingen and takes you once around the municipality. In addition to flowering meadows, fields, fir forests, beech forests and mixed forests, the Uplandsteig trail offers breathtaking views.
During your hike, climb the 843 m high Langenberg - the highest mountain in Hochsauerland and NRW. Another highlight of this hike are the boundary stones on various paths from times long past as well as historical sites such as the Richtplatz.
Our tip: This hike can be ideally completed in 3 day tours (22 km each).
Discover the natural jewel in the Sauerland: a rustic hiking trail with heart leads you around the impressive Diemelsee lake, very close to Willingen. At 63 km, the certified Diemelsteig quality hiking trail can be ideally divided into several daily stages.
The entire length of the trail leads through green valleys and imposing mountain ranges in the Diemelsee Nature Park. With 1,700 meters of ascent and descent, the quality hiking trail is one of the moderately difficult hiking trails in Germany. Be impressed by the gentle low mountain range landscape with its constant alternation of forests, fields and meadows.
Vacation enjoyment, nature experiences and pure relaxation are on offer here!
Our tip: while on your hike, stay at Göbel's Seehotel, right on the shore of the lake, with a beautiful terrace.
You shouldn't miss this when you visit Willingen: The two highlights and sights of Willingen can be ideally combined on this short and not too challenging circular trail.
Take the panoramic cabin in the Ettelsberg cable car up to the mountain, or climb it on foot (approx. 45 minutes). From the mountain station, enjoy the view from the Hochheideturm tower and then walk a few meters further along the Kyrillpfad trail. After approx. 1.5 km, you will reach the inrun tower of the world's largest ski jump - the annual venue of the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup. Passing the Romantik Hotel Stryckhaus, you return to the village center through the idyllic Stryck Valley.
Our tip: Excellent for families with children and beginners.
Discover the many beautiful restaurants and rustic huts to stop off and rest on your hiking tours, e.g. Café-Restaurant Aufwind, Café Fernblick, Ettelsberg Hütte, Graf Stolberg Hütte, Hochheide Hütte, K1 Hütte, Vis à Vis Hütte.
